The gold mine part -3
Part 3: The Heart of the Mine
The chamber beyond the door was vast, with walls of glittering gold that
reflected the flickering torchlight. Piles of treasure—coins, jewels, and
artifacts—were scattered across the floor, a dragon's hoard hidden in the heart
of the earth. But as Lucas stepped inside, he realized this was no ordinary
treasure trove.
The whispers were deafening now, swirling around him like a storm. Donny could feel them tugging at his mind, trying to pull him under. He stumbled,
clutching his head, but Old Ben grabbed his arm, pulling him back.
"Focus, lad! It's the curse, trying to break you!"
Donny forced himself to breathe, to center his thoughts. The treasure
glittered temptingly, but something was wrong with it—something that
made his skin crawl.
And then he saw it. A golden idol in the center of the chamber, atop a raised platform, its eyes glowing with an unnatural light. It was the source
of the whispers, the heart of the mine's curse.
"We have to destroy it," Donny realized, his voice barely audible over
the din. "It's the only way to break the curse."
Old Ben nodded grimly. "But it's not going to be easy. The mine won't
let us go without a fight."
As if on cue, the ground began to tremble. The walls cracked, and chunks of
gold rained down like deadly hail. The chamber collapsed, and the mine was determined to bury its secrets forever.
Donny and Old Ben raced toward the idol, dodging falling debris and barely
maintaining their footing. As they reached the platform, a massive stone fell
from the ceiling, striking Old Ben and pinning him to the ground.
"Go, Donny!" he gasped, blood trickling from the corner of his
mouth. "Destroy it!"
Lucas hesitated, torn between helping the old man and completing the
mission. But there was no time to waste. With a roar, he grabbed the idol, its
surface burning hot to the touch, and smashed it against the stone.
The idol shattered, releasing a blinding light that filled the chamber. The
whispers stopped abruptly, replaced by a deafening silence. The ground ceased
to tremble, and the collapsing chamber stabilized.
But the damage was done. The mine was falling apart, and Donny knew they had
only moments to escape. He rushed to Old Ben's side, desperately trying to free
him, but the old man shook his head.
"Leave me, lad. You did it. The curse is broken. Now go... before it's
too late."
Donny's heart ached, but he knew Old Ben was right. With one last look, he
turned and ran, the mine collapsing behind him. He barely made it out before
the entrance caved in, sealing the cursed treasure within forever.
Breathing heavily, Donny stood outside the now-buried mine, the early
morning sun casting long shadows across the ground. The whispers were gone, and
with them, the promise of untold riches. But as he looked at the mountain, Donny felt something he hadn't in a long time—peace.
The gold was lost, but he had found something far more valuable. As he
walked away from the Blackridge Mountains, he knew that the past no longer had
a hold on him.
Raven's Hollow had whispered of the gold mine for generations, but now it
would speak of Don Donny Donald, the man who had faced the curse and lived to
tell the tale.
